Jaigarh Fort Jaipur: Jaivana Cannon, Tunnels & Viewpoints

Standing high atop Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles), Jaigarh Fort was the military stronghold that guarded Amer Palace below. Unconquered throughout its history, it retains its unvarnished defense layout, an ancient artillery foundry, and the world’s largest wheeled cannon.

Local auto drivers outside Amer Fort often quote ₹500 to drive you the winding 7 km road up to Jaigarh.

The Smart Alternative: If you are physically fit, use the subterranean heritage tunnel that connects Amer Fort directly up to Jaigarh’s Awani Darwaza. Alternatively, negotiate a combined round-trip waiting fare beforehand.

What to Explore Inside Jaigarh

  1. Jaivana Cannon: Cast in 1720 CE inside the fort’s own foundry. Weighing 50 tons with an 8-meter barrel, it was fired only once experimentally, sending a cannonball an estimated 35 kilometers.
  2. The Water Catchment Reservoirs: Three massive subterranean tanks capable of holding 6 million gallons of rainwater collected from a 4-kilometer hill catchment system.
  3. The Diwa Burj & Ramparts: The highest watchtower bastion of the fort, offering an aerial view directly looking down into Amer Palace and Sagar Lake.

Visiting Tips & Terrain

  • Walking Distance: The fort layout is expansive and rugged. Wear sturdy walking shoes as the stone courtyards have minimal shade.
  • Combined Circuit: Jaigarh connects the Amer valley below with the ridgeline road that runs toward Nahargarh. Grouping all three saves significant road backtracking.
